Continuing to produce a traditional material

By Jennifer Richinelli
October 1, 2012
Located in Custonaci, Sicily, Italy Group Pellegrino Import-Export srl has been in the marble business for nearly 20 years. Among the stone that the company quarries is Rosso Sicilia marble — a calcareous stone from the Jurassic period.

Rosso Sicilia marble has been around for millions of years, and it was often used for ornamental applications in hotels, villas and churches in the region. According to local stone producers, the marble that was used 2,500 years ago is still the variation that is found today.

The Rosso Sicilia marble quarry operated by Pellegrino is only four years old. The quarry is divided into two areas, with one area spanning 20,000 square meters. Blocks are cut at the quarry with a diamond wire saw. Approximately 12,000 tons of marble is produced per year.

Pellegrino Import-Export srl also owns quarries which produce Perlato and Perlatino Sicilia marble. All raw blocks are cut and fabricated into slabs or tiles at the company’s production plant. The company supplies to a worldwide market, including the Middle Eastern and Far East countries.
