“Wowed” by the Technology Behind the Beauty

Stationed amidst the beautiful landscape of the wine country of Valpolicello, Italy, Santamargherita S.p.A. has been producing high-quality quartz slabs since the 1960s. The company’s SM Marble and SM Quartz lines are sought-after by consumers from around the world.
Fabricators on the Stone Fabricator’s Alliance’s (SFA) Italy Tour this year were amazed to see the production process. Observing how the blocks of each material are formed and then cut into slabs was interesting and exciting to them.
“To see how the quartz slabs are made, was one of my favorite parts of the trip,” said Joey Ontra of Connecticut Stone. “That is something I have never really understood or seen before. I always thought it was with epoxies and resins mixed up like a soup and poured into a mold, but that is not it at all. It is a bunch of powder that is compressed, and it is a very different process than what I was expecting. So that was one thing for me that really stood out.”
Santamargherita outputs up to 80,000 square feet of slabs per day, which are exported to more than 70 countries. The company upholds a high standard with several important certifications, including:
- GreenGuard Gold -- for low VOC emission
- NSF Food Zone – ensuring food-safe surface contact
- Kosher Certification – compliant with Kosher food standards
- LEED v4 Compatibility – supports sustainable building certification
- REACH Compliance – meeting EU chemical safety standards
