An Immersion into the Italian Stone Industry
Women Who Rock spent a week in Italy touring stone production facilities, visiting Marmomac and sharing time together to discuss important topics and learn from each other

Late September, a delegation of Women Who Rock (WWR) members embarked on a journey to Italy – excited to immerse themselves in the Italian stone industry. In addition to visiting large stone production facilities, the group had time for discussions and networking, as well as touring the exhibit halls of Marmomac 2025 – set in Verona, Italy.
Stone World caught up with Jessica McNaughton, president of CaraGreen in Raleigh, NC, to share insight into the WWR trip.
SW: To start, for those who are not familiar with WWR, tell us a little about the group.
JM: WWR is a collective of women working in fabrication, materials and design. The group curates immersive experiences, shares technical knowledge, fosters collaboration and amplifies women’s presence in industries in which they are often underrepresented or unable to have a voice and collaborate with like-minded peers.
SW: How did the trip to Italy come about?
JM: WWR organized the trip as a hands-on immersion for women fabricators, makers and associates to step into the core of the stone and surfaces industry. Given Italy’s central role in that field and the timing of Marmomac in Verona, it presented an ideal context. Through industry connections (e.g. Antolini, Stone Italiana), the group arranged factory and studio tours, and fair access.
SW: What was the main intent of the trip?
JM: The goal was to experience, learn and amplify. WWR intended for participants to observe how leading firms operate, engage with material and design narratives, raise women’s visibility in fabrication and return with fresh ideas and connections.
SW: What were some highlights?
JM: Highlights included:
- Behind-the-scenes tours of Antolini and Stone Italiana -- observing operations, finishing methods, design thinking.
- Walking Marmomac: installations, talks and brand storytelling.
- Informal exchanges over meals and coffee about techniques, challenges and collaboration.
- Media coverage and press visibility that elevated WWR’s presence.
- Visioning sessions to strategize how to translate observed practices back home.
- Emerson Schwartzkopf from Stone Update and Eddie Martinez of Custom Slab Works in San Marcos, CA, accompanied us as well.
SW: Does WWR have any plans for 2026 that you would like to share?
JM: An international trip is planned for next year and WWR is seeking input from women and industry peers on potential destinations. Suggestions will be considered and compiled to help shape the itinerary for our immersive 2026 event.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
JM: Most importantly, this year, WWR honored Joan Schatz with its award for “Leadership in the Industry.” Joan, as the CEO of Park Industries, has supported WWR and its mission along with enabling and fostering female leaders in the industry throughout her tenure at Park. We cherish our moments with Joan and the insight and professionalism she brings to the group and the industry.
