CEO and company founder Joe Dwyer shares insights into starting and growing a stone distribution business

Left to Right: Tim Dwyer (COO), John Dwyer (CFO), Joe Dwyer (CEO) and Todd Dwyer (Director of IT).
With locations in Farmington Hills and Grand Rapids, MI, Dwyer Marble & Stone has serviced contractors, builders and fabricators since 1995. The privately held, family owned stone distribution business is run by CEO and Founder Joe Dwyer. On the heels of its 30th anniversary, Dwyer took time to talk with Stone World about the company’s path to success, its company culture and future plans.
SW: Congratulations on Dwyer Marble & Stone’s 30th anniversary! Tell us a little bit about how the company got started and how it has evolved to what it is today.
JD: Thank you. Thirty years ago, we started Dwyer Marble & Stone with a simple idea: to bring the world’s most beautiful natural stone to customers who value both design and service. What began as a small family run operation has grown into a regional leader with a national presence. Over the years, we have expanded beyond natural stone and tile into quartz and porcelain, always keeping our focus on quality materials, strong partnerships and exceptional service.
SW: What do you think has been the key to building and growing a successful business through three decades?
JD: The key has always been relationships. Products change, markets shift and challenges arise, but trust and integrity never go out of style. We have worked hard to earn the trust of our employees, customers and suppliers, and honor that trust every day. That foundation has allowed us to adapt, grow and remain relevant through three decades of change.
SW: Being a family owned business, I imagine you have a strong company culture. What are some ways that you show appreciation to your employees to build and maintain a strong team?
JD: Our people are the heart of this company. We make it a priority to celebrate wins, invest in their growth and give them opportunities to lead. We host events, recognize milestones and foster a culture where collaboration and accountability go hand in hand. But most importantly, we listen. Our employees know they have a voice in shaping the company’s future.
SW: What markets do you primarily serve?
JD: We proudly serve both residential and commercial markets. On the residential side, we work with designers and architects, builders, fabricators and consumers on new construction and renovation. On the commercial side, we partner with architects and designers, general contractors, fabricators and contractors on everything from retail and hospitality to multifamily and institutional projects. Our footprint has expanded over the years, growing from primarily the Midwest to working with clients all over the country. Our commitment is to serve each market with excellence.
SW: As a distributor of natural stone and quartz materials, you must encounter challenges, such as the radon scare, silica, tariffs, etc., through the years. When a situation arises, what are some steps you take to address and overcome it?
JD: Challenges are part of doing business in this industry, and we have seen our fair share. Our approach is always the same: stay informed, communicate openly and act responsibly. Whether it is educating customers, adjusting supply chains or advocating for sensible policies, we take a proactive stance. We don’t shy away from hard conversations, because in the end, clarity and honesty build trust.
SW: What are some ways that you educate your customers about the products you sell?
JD: Education is central to what we do. We host CEU presentations, showroom events and product training sessions, and we provide tools, both digital and in person, that help our customers make informed choices. Surfaces are a major investment, and we believe customers should feel confident in their decision. Education reduces uncertainty, sets realistic expectations, and ultimately helps projects succeed.
SW: What are some plans the company has for the near future?
JD: We are focused on scaling our business while staying true to our roots. That means expanding our exclusive product lines, deepening our presence in key markets and investing in technology and logistics that make us a stronger partner to our customers. Our goal is to continue growing as a design-forward, service-driven distributor -- one that leads the industry into the next era.
SW: Is there anything else you would like to share?
JD: Just gratitude. Gratitude for our employees, customers and partners who have been part of this 30-year journey. Building this company has been an honor and privilege and we are excited about what is ahead. The surfaces we provide are only one part of the story; the real story is really about people. Their trust and commitment are what make Dwyer Marble & Stone what it is today.
