ONTARIO, CANADA -- Skills Ontario is kicking off celebrations for International Day of the Girl through hosting a series of free online events. Starting this week, participants can watch “A Sit Down With…” a series of videos dedicated to sitting down with passionate tradeswomen to learn about their journey in the industry.
During this one-on-one sit down, participants will be introduced to a speaker from a specific skilled trade or technology career field and learn why this person entered the field, why the viewer should consider this career and how to be an advocate and ally for young women in the skilled trades.
At the same time, Skills Ontario is also launching the Character Animation Tutorial and Challenge. Participants can learn how to bring stories to life by learning step-by-step techniques for creating movement, adding dialogue and designing original characters through the use of Google Slides. This challenge will run throughout October with the last day to submit an animated story on October 22nd.
“We’re thrilled to be delivering these virtual activities to celebrate International Day of the Girl,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario. “Our goal is to ensure that young people are given engaging opportunities to pursue skilled trades and technologies. We welcome young women to celebrate empowerment and achievement while exploring opportunities in the skilled trades and technologies. We believe events like these can help change lives and inspire skilled trade and technology leaders.”
On October 9th and October 10th, the Skills Ontario Young Women’s Initiatives will end the week of celebrations by hosting three in-person events for International Day of the Girl in Ottawa, Sudbury and Bracebridge.
Skills Ontario’s Young Women’s Initiatives are funded by the Ontario Government, CN Rail and Magna. Special thank you to our Premium Conferences -- Event Sponsor [Sudbury]: Côté Gold.
Established by the United Nations in 2012, the International Day of the Girl is commemorated on October 11, 2021. Skills Ontario has expanded beyond this date to offer a challenge series, a virtual workshop and an engaging conference to empower girls to consider skilled trade and technology pathways. This year’s theme for International Day of the Girl is, "The girl I am, the change I lead.”
