When working on the home of a prominent developer in North Carolina, Len Malavé of Granite and Marble by Malavé in Greensboro, NC, knew that the stonework would have to be innovative and unique, with top-notch craftsmanship. In the end, the design utilizes a range of complex, one-of-a-kind stone applications, anchored by a striking kitchen countertop made from Indian granite.
Malavé fabricated the kitchen’s center island from Madura Gold granite, which was originally quarried in India. The countertop features what Malavé referred to as a “laminate full bullnose with reverse half-bullnose edge profile.” This island, which also features an undermounted sink, is the focal point of the kitchen. Other countertops in the kitchen were fabricated from a darker granite, which has a full bullnose edge profile.
Stone was also used in a tile format for a full-height backsplash in the kitchen as well as the stove hood.
At the home’s main staircase, custom stonework also makes a grand impression for visitors to the residence. In this area, the design called for the use of travertine from Mexico, which was used for the floors as well as the staircase itself.
Travertine was used for the treads and risers of the curved staircase, and the stonework also carries to the wall, giving the individual steps a three-dimensional effect.
Meanwhile, the travertine floor was sanded and polished on site, adding another level of quality and craftsmanship to the project.
