Report from Brazil: A first-class source for high-end materials

By Michael Reis
June 1, 2006
Grein Brasil has built offices and a 3,500-square-meter storage hall in Serra, Brazil, near the Vitória Airport. In all, the company has 100,000 square meters of land at the site.

Currently, Grein Brasil stocks about 250 containers (18,000 square meters) of material.
Grein Brasil was founded in 2004 by Ivo Siviero and Michael Cramer, both shareholders and managing directors of Grein Italia in Affi, Verona, Italy. Both have more than 40 years of experience in all fields of the stone industry, ranging from the selection of stone to processing and distribution. Together with their fellow shareholders Heinz Petrasch and Gerd Bergmann, Siviero and Cramer bought 100,000 square meters of land in Serra, Brazil, close to the Vitória Airport, and the company is looking to set itself apart by offering new and unique slab materials.

“Right now, we have about 60 interesting materials in stock,” said Castro Moreira, managing director of Grein Brasil.

So far, Grein Brasil has built offices and a storage hall measuring 3,500 square meters, which stocks about 250 containers (18,000 square meters) of material. “Right now, we have about 60 interesting materials in stock,” said Castro Moreira, the new managing director of Grein Brasil. Moreira, who speaks Italian and English as well as Portuguese, has two decades of experience in the stone industry, and his connections will help Grein Brasil increase its selection of materials even further in the future.

Thus far, Grein Brasil has utilized 50,000 square meters of the land, and the rest is covered by coffee plants and palm trees. A second building will be built within two to three years, and it will house eight gangsaws, according to Cramer.

Even the blond and golden stone varieties are unique in their patterning and coloration- such as Blond Amazonas,
Exports for Grein Brasil stand at 25 containers per month, and this total will reach 30 by the end of the year. The primary market is the U.S., which comprises 90% of Grein Brasil's exports. In speaking about the company philosophy, Cramer and Export Manager Patrick Domenis explained that Grein Brasil wants to specialize in high-end materials, and not the “commodity items” sold by many competitors. Unique and exotic materials include Luise Blue, Snow Flake and Flamengo Red. Even the blond and golden stone varieties - such as Blond Amazonas, Golden Aryton, Golden Stephany and Jordan Gold - are unique in their patterning and coloration.

During the recent Vitória Stone Fair, the Grein Group officially held the “Grand Opening” for its new branch. Business partners and clients from the U.S. and Canada joined in celebrating the inauguration of Grein Brasil, and the group also had a 1,600-square-foot exhibition booth at the fair itself.
