Started more than 30 years ago, Barbosa Cabinets, Inc. is a family-run business that prides itself on efficiency and outstanding customer service. From its humble beginnings as a cabinet shop working out of a 2,500-square-foot facility, the company has grown to include a full-scale countertop division, which operates out of a 66,000-square-foot plant in Lathrop, CA.
When it was founded, K & D Counter Tops of Trenton, IL, specialized in the production of laminate countertops. But as time passed, the company evolved to the point that it is now primarily a stone fabrication shop. And despite a slowing economy, K & D Counter Tops has held its ground and has continued growing by diversifying into other segments.
Over the past few years, countertop fabricators across North America have expanded their business into sectors such as tile, sinks, fireplaces and even cabinetry in order to provide a more complete buying experience for their customers.
Frank’s Marble & Granite, LLC, of Red Lion, PA, was founded in 1972 by Frank Pantano, who learned the stoneworking trade in his native Italy. In its early stages, the company was primarily an installer of ceramic and stone tiles, and it moved into slab processing in the early 1980s.
Developing Galaxy Granite Inc. into a success was a labor of love for owner Meng Peng. Starting out as a carpet business in 1985, the San Francisco, CA-based company evolved to include a stone fabrication division in 1999. What initially began as a one-man shop has grown to include 23 employees, including its own installation crew.
After working as stone fabricators and artisans in the Washington/Baltimore area for several years, Rodney Bair and Travis Collins decided to break away and begin their own company in 1993. The resulting company, BC Stone, is now a full-production fabricator with its main operation in Everett, PA, and a second shop in Wilmington, NC.
Since its foundation 23 years ago, StoneWorks of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, has placed a special emphasis on quality, organization and craftsmanship. Earlier this year, the family-owned company received acknowledgment of its commitment to the trade with its designation as a Marble Institute of America (MIA) Accredited Natural Stone Fabricator.
Nearly two decades ago, when the stonecutters at Owen Sound Ledgerock of Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, learned that the company was making a serious investment in CNC mills and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software, the group concluded that their jobs were in jeopardy.
