SW: Tell us a little about how you began your career in the stone industry and your current role at Informa.
AG: My career in the stone industry began with my experience in the trade show industry. I started working on Surfaces in 2000 when Hanley Wood acquired the show. When StonExpo was acquired, I worked on both events until they were co-located in 2011.
Working on events that promote and cater to the stone industry has allowed me to build strong relationships with suppliers and industry professionals. Over the years, I've held various positions on the team, including sales, operations, marketing, and now, the show director. It's incredibly rewarding to see the show come together from start to finish and then begin planning for the next one. I work with an amazing team that make hard work really fun!
SW: What is one of your favorite parts about being a show director for the stone industry?
AG: One of my favorite aspects of my career is continuously learning about the stone industry. The machinery, technology and materials are fascinating to see at our events and later in consumers' homes. It's incredibly rewarding to know that our event helps both established and new businesses enter the market and achieve profitability.
SW: In your role, you interact with a broad range of industry members. What would you say are a few of your most memorable experiences?
AG: The people I've met and continue to meet each year at events are truly remarkable. Beyond our annual event, we engage with the industry year-round. I look forward to connecting with my stone industry friends throughout the year, both across the country and around the world. Along the way, I've made some wonderful friendships.
SW: What are some ways you and your team come up with new show features/educational programs that you feel would benefit industry members?
AG: There is a need to learn new products and methods to stay relevant in the stone industry. We have amazing partnerships with intelligent individuals who provide expertise and insights, which we tap into for various topics. Additionally, we actively seek suggestions, requests and needs from our exhibitor and attendee audience.
SW: When you are not working, what do you like to do in your free time?
AG: In my free time, I love spending time with my two kids. My daughter is studying interior design at the University of Oklahoma (my alma mater, Boomer Sooner!), while my son is a high school sophomore. I spend a lot of time watching him play football, lacrosse and soccer. I also enjoy quality time with family and friends, and I love live music and concerts. I can’t forget my mini-bernedoodle, who is an important part of the family.
SW: What is something that people might not know about you?
AG: I grew up in a small rural town on a farm in Oklahoma, where my first job was mowing a very large yard twice a week. This experience stayed with me into adulthood. I still enjoy mowing the lawn, tackling home projects and driving a big truck.
SW: Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or what you do in the industry?
SW: I am fortunate to work in this industry with so many amazing people and an industry that gives back.
