ASID honors Lifetime Award recipients

June 7, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC -- As part of its National Honors recognition program, The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) bestows its Lifetime Award on professional members who have maintained membership for 25 years or more while making continual and important contributions to the Society. This year's recipients include two former ASID national board members, a member who has served as a chair and educator, and a dedicated former chapter president.

"This award is intended to recognize members who have continually raised the bar at ASID across decades of membership," said Randy Fiser, ASID CEO. "Their engagement goes beyond keeping their membership current. They've demonstrated constant involvement and contributions to their chapters and to the Society. Their dedication is inspiring to other members, volunteers and staff."

All four recipients are former ASID chapter presidents, and three have served on the Society's national board. One served as chair of the ASID National Board.

ASID is honored to announce the 2016 Lifetime Awards recipients: Carl Clark, FASID, ICEC, MLS; Jane-Page Crump, RID, ASID; Joan "Abby" Menhenett, ASID; and Michael Thomas, FASID, CAPS.

Clark is Professor Emeritus Interior Design (former Program Coordinator) at Northern Arizona University (Arizona North Chapter). A former chapter president and national board member, he has served ASID since it was founded in 1975. Clark was the California Palm Springs Inland Chapter president in 1984 and was on the Society's national board in 1986 as regional vice president for the California region. While serving on multiple national committees and task forces, Clark continued his chapter involvement as a judge for multiple awards programs and interior design coalitions in California and Arizona. Inducted into the ASID College of Fellows in 1992, he received the ASID Medalist award in 1987. He continues to influence the designers of tomorrow at Northern Arizona University where he has been teaching for 17 years.

Crump is the president of Jane-Page Design Group (Texas Gulf Coast Chapter). An ASID Medalist and former Texas Gulf Coast Chapter (TGCC) president, Crump has been an instrumental leader in the chapter, using her extensive financial expertise to bolster the chapter's fundraising and budgeting efforts during a tough financial period. After becoming a member of ASID and the TGCC Chapter in 1987, she volunteered on TGCC fundraising committees, became a board member in 1991 and served as chapter president in 1993. During that time, Crump helped the chapter diversify and grow its revenue streams by creating programs like Home and Kitchen tours that netted $10,000 to $35,000 per event. Her efforts were noticed by the Society's national board and in 1996 she joined an ASID National Task Force on Accounting and worked with Board President Michael Allen to develop an accounting program and guidelines for all ASID chapters. Crump continues to volunteer with TGCC and other nonprofit design groups in Texas, all while winning numerous design awards for her professional work.

Menhenett is the Owner of Joan Menhenett Interior Design (California Orange County Chapter). A former ASID Medalist and an ASID member for 40 years, Joan "Abby" Menhenett has made continuous contributions to ASID in leadership, community service, and education roles at the national and chapter levels. As a member of the Ohio North Chapter from 1977-1982, Abby served on the chapter board, contributing to its community service efforts. She brought her passion for community service to the Orange County Chapter in 1982, joining the chapter board in 1983 and serving as chapter president from 1985 to 1986. During her tenure as president, the chapter initiated a service project with the Orange County Performing Arts Center (now the Segerstrom Center) that won a national ASID Chapter Community Service award. She served on the ASID National Board from 1987-88 and has served as an educator and mentor. Abby has continued to lead chapter community service projects with the United Cerebral Palsy Children's Center, the Orange County Philharmonic Society, the American Cancer Society and more.

Thomas is the president and principal of The DESIGN Collective Group (Palm Springs Chapter). A member since 1983, Thomas has served in top leadership roles at the chapter and national level. He served in multiple board director positions in the Florida South Chapter and became chapter president in 1999. Throughout his membership, he continued to serve the Society at the local level, coordinating fundraisers, proctoring the NCIDQ exam, and acting as a speaker and facilitator for numerous continuing education sessions. He transitioned to national service in 2000, serving on the Chapter Support Team and later on the Communications and Knowledge Resources Advisory Council. Elected as the chair of the ASID National Board in 2010, Thomas is an author and well-known speaker in the design community, and was inducted into the Society's College of Fellows in 2004. He currently leads The DESIGN Collective Group in Palm Springs, CA.

The ASID Lifetime Award recognizes and rewards individual ASID members for their special contributions to the Society. Learn more about ASID Lifetime Award criteria.
