Retail space requires high-quality installation system

The recent transformation from the SuperMall to The Outlet Collection: Seattle in Auburn, WA, relied on an installation system from Ardex Americas to meet the demands of the high-end fast-tracked project

July 10, 2014
SuperMall, a hybrid mall located in Auburn, WA, was to be transformed into a premium outlet center known as The Outlet Collection: Seattle. Designed to signify an upscale, first-class collection of quality outlet retailers, The Outlet Collection brand also represents the transformation from hybrid outlets to pure outlets. SuperMall renovations were to include new flooring, interior rails and light fixtures as well as new concourse furniture and interior signage.

The renovation included replacing the existing tile and hardwood floors with porcelain and glass wall and floor tile. As the old flooring was removed, contractors revealed severe leveling issues. Newly poured concrete required moisture mitigation measures to be taken.

The solution

Ardex Sales Professionals William White and Tom Cary provided product demonstrations, support and specifications for this complex installation. After completing an Ardex 8+9™ Waterproofing and Crack Isolation Compound demonstration for Prime Flooring, the installer for the project, Per Wollebeck of the company decided that Ardex products were right for the job. Cary recommended Ardex MC™ Rapid Moisture Control System to address moisture issues in new concrete. To correct the leveling issues, Ardex Ardiflo™ AMP 100 was used to pump the Ardex self-leveling underlayment.

Once a smooth flat surface was in place, the tile installation could begin. Ardex X 5™ Thin Set Mortar is water resistant and was suitable for the porcelain and glass tiles on the project — its three-hour pot life and easy to trowel consistency gave installers extended flexibility, coverage and ease of use. Ardex FL™ Rapid Set, Flexible Sanded Grout has a revolutionary creamy smooth consistency that allows installers to cover double the area in the same amount of time.

Floors can be open to traffic in just 90 minutes. These product features were critical, because the tile installations took place over night, and the mall would open for business each morning. Ardex met budget, schedule and depth requirements (¾ inch) for self-leveling underlayments and Prime Flooring was pleased with the installation success. The teamwork of White and Cary added extra value for Prime Flooring. The combination of Ardex Tile & Stone Installation Systems and Ardex substrate preparation products provided Prime Flooring a five-year SystemOne™ warranty.
