Indian granite forms a new skyline in Bangalore

August 7, 2007

United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd., has developed the largest mixed-use project -- UB City -- in the heart of Bangalore, India. UB City is located at the corner of Vittal Mallya Road and Kasturba Road, just steps away from Bangalore’s commercial hub, M.G. Road. And to distinguish the project’s modern, streamlined architecture, the design called for extensive use of Indian granite, quarried and fabricated by Pokarna Limited of Secunderabad, India.
The project includes multiple granite-clad buildings, all of which have a Western look that is reminiscent of the modern skyscrapers found in major U.S. cities. The master plan places all of the United Breweries (UB) offices under one roof, which is named UB Tower. Meanwhile, the “Concorde” and “Canberra” building spaces feature retail space on the lower floors and office space at the higher levels, while the “Comet” building houses serviced apartments.
The complex also houses commer-cial offices, banks, high-end retail stores, a five-star hotel, restaurants, food courts, pubs, health clubs and cafes. Being an environmentally friendly project and keeping in mind the green surroundings of nearby Cubbon Park, one-third of the space has been earmarked for landscaped gardens.
The main construction company involved in the project is Prestige Estates Projects Pvt. Ltd. of Bangalore, which is part of the Prestige Group, and the chief architect of the project is Thomas Associates-Architects of Bangalore. According to Prestige Estates Projects, the entire project team has been sensitive to the needs of the neighboring residential areas, and all construction work is stopped after 11 p.m.

The project includes multiple granite-clad buildings, all of which have a Western look that is reminiscent of modern U.S. skyscrapers.

A colossal stone project

Pokarna Limited, one of India’s leading stone producers, has supplied a massive amount of Indian granite for the project over the course of the past two years. The breakdown of material is as follows:
· Dragon Red -- over 103,000 square feet
· Imperial Gold -- nearly 72,000 square feet
· Lavender Blue -- over 62,000 square feet
· Ruby Red -- over 94,000 square feet
· Sadharally Grey -- over 72,000 square feet
· Silver Pearl -- nearly 146,000 square feet
· Tan Brown -- over 2,000 square feet
· Tropical Gold -- over 35,000
square feet
The project has been met with rave reviews in the Times of India as well as other publications, one of which stated: “Mr. Vijay Mallya, Chairman of UB Group, has the same charisma as Donald Trump, and UB City is his dream project.”
