Focus on Indian Stone: High-tech office design achieved with native granite

By Jennifer Richinelli
August 1, 2006
Prestige Technology Park is in the process of being built in Bangalore, India, and Pokarna Ltd. has been chosen to supply a large amount of different granite varieties, which will be used for the buildings' interior design. At this time, the first of three buildings has been completed and a second one is currently under construction.

With a surge in the computer industry in Bangalore, India, the city is experiencing a boom in development. A large infrastructure is being established to meet these growing demands, and, as a result, many business parks are being built. Among these new campuses is Prestige Technology Park, and Pokarna Ltd. is exclusively supplying granite for the entire project.

The business complex, which will be comprised of three buildings upon completion, sits on 950,000 square feet of land. As of press time, the first building has been built, and a second is under construction. To date, Pokarna has produced a total of 230,350 square feet of different granite varieties, which are being extensively used for both interior flooring and wall cladding. Work on the business park began in March 2005, and all three buildings are scheduled for completion by the end of 2007.

For public spaces such as elevator lobbies within the first building, a combination of flamed and polished Royal Green granite pieces - as well as Pokarna Green granite tiles - were employed extensively as wall and floor cladding.
“The material dispatch started off in March 2005 for the first building, while the order was placed two weeks prior to that in February,” said Siddharth Jain, Executive Director of Pokarna. “Now, the material for the second building is being processed and simultaneously being sent to the site in Bangalore. In all, the anticipated time for the completion of the 'Tec Park' is the fourth quarter of 2007.”

According to Jain, the design team was searching for a green-colored granite that was hard, not porous and that was available in huge quantities. “They finally zeroed in on Royal Green and Pokarna Green,” he said. “We had to face a tremendous challenge in procurement of the Royal Green color, as the deposit in the quarry is quite old. We had to make a lot of effort to mark the blocks of the same shade, as was the demand for this project.”

In total, Pokarna supplied 20,850 square feet of Royal Green granite with a polished finish and 10,800 square feet of the same material with a flamed finish in 20-mm-thick random slabs for the interior of the buildings. Additionally, a total of 18,400 square feet of Pokarna Green with a polished finish was utilized for the project so far.

In addition to the green materials, large quantities of Tropical Gold, Viscont White and Coffee Brown were included in the design of the buildings as well as other granite selections, such as Jet Black, Kuppam Green, Lavender Blue, Silver Pearl and Ruby Red. “Whatever be the volumes required, Pokarna has met them to the fullest and on schedule,” said Jain.
