Building products that are not only eco-friendly but also promote wellness for building occupants continue to gain traction. ZHERORisk®, a new line of non-toxic, non-corrosive and sustainably produced tile installation products, exemplifies this growing trend.

Developed to provide a safer and healthier alternative to existing tile installation materials, ZHERORisk products emit no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and have been certified by GEV-EMICODE® to meet the strictest tolerances and standards for indoor air quality.

They have been formulated using renewable raw and recycled materials while generating minimal environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle.

In contrast, the majority of tile installation products on the market today are corrosive and have caustic chemistries. While these products provide high performance, regulations require that the “Danger” warning be included on their containers/packaging. If not disposed of properly, product waste can end up in the soil and water supply, posing an environmental risk. In addition, many of these products off-gas VOCs, which can compromise indoor air quality and create potential health hazards for installers and consumers.

During the past two-and-a-half years, the European Union (EU) sponsored an extensive R&D project aimed at lowering to zero the safety, health and environmental risks associated with high performance tile installation products. The project involved a collaboration between leading universities in the tile-producing region of Italy and manufacturers with a demonstrated commitment to sustainable product development and manufacturing.

The result of this initiative is ZHERORisk, a major materials innovation with the potential to significantly reduce the risks that currently exist when installing tile and stone.
