Fabricator Case Study: Providing a quality end product

By Michelle Stinnard
January 1, 2007
Palm Beach Marble’s 7,500-square-foot facility, located in Riviera Beach, FL, produces an average of 10 kitchens per week by utilizing a variety of state-of-the-art technology from Matrix Stone Products of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, including a Sebring gantry saw.

Palm Beach Marble, which serves as both a flooring contractor and a stone fabricator in South Florida, has grown tremendously since opening in 2003. The company’s 7,500-square-foot building in Riviera Beach, FL, houses a fabrication shop, showroom and slab yard.

The shop is also equipped with a Daytona Edge Profiling System from Matrix Stone Products, which runs constantly, according to the company’s owner, Carlos Castilla.

In order to keep up with a demanding production schedule, Palm Beach Marble relies on a variety of technology from Matrix Stone Products of Rancho Cucamonga, CA. A Sebring gantry saw and a Daytona Edge Profiling System, which run constantly - according to Carlos Castilla, owner of Palm Beach Marble - are in place at the facility. “They are both excellent pieces of equipment that fit our needs perfectly,” he said. “I don’t know what we would do without them.” In addition to a variety of hand tools at the shop, edges are processed using a Ghines Sector portable router from Italy.

The company currently produces an average of 10 kitchens per week, and fabrication work includes countertops, vanity tops, tabletops, stairs, walls, floors and ceilings, etc. Principle markets include builders and designers, and production is 60% flooring and 40% fabrication work. Additionally, the company purchases its slabs both locally and overseas. “We cater to high-end homes in South Florida,” said the owner. “All of our business is the result of word of mouth from contractors, designers and decorators, and we like to think that it is due to our work ethics and pursuit of excellence.

The company employs a staff of 22, who were hired through advertising and referrals. “All employees in our fabrication facilities have numerous years of experience, and most are crossed trained,” said Castilla, adding that staff members are also put through a safety program after being hired. According to the owner, the biggest challenge is finding reliable employees, but offering overtime and benefits help keep good workers around.

Palm Beach Marble maintains a vast inventory at its facility, and it purchases slabs both locally and overseas.

“The secret to our success and rapid growth is listening to our customers and giving them a quality end product in a minimum amount of time,” the company stated. “Our talented staff assists in planning every detail from start to finish. We understand the importance of setting up jobs effectively. We field measure every job prior to executing a contract to ensure correct measurements in the scope of work, labor and material quantities. We work with the customer, assist in selections and supply samples.”
