Third-Party Tests Establish Use of Indiana Limestone Co. Pavers

May 2, 2018

Bloomington, IN - Two industry standards and a purpose-designed third-party durability test establish installing Indiana Limestone pavers over aggregate as an acceptable installation method. The Indiana Limestone Company is a premier producer of these beautiful, versatile, durable products, a part of its Urban Hardscapes line.

Numerous landscape and hardscape designs, especially in residential applications, call for paving installed over compacted aggregate. Indiana Limestone Company is the first manufacturer to test the durability of Indiana limestone pavers installed over a compacted aggregate base. Under freeze/thaw conditions, in wet and dry conditions, and with hundreds of thousands of simulated footsteps, the pavers performed well to a rigorous series of challenges.

Tests for resistance to freezing and thawing showed that Indiana Limestone pavers retained nearly all their mass. These tests were conducted according to industry standard performance criteria specified in ASTM C936, Section 5.5 (ASTM C1645).

Tested on aggregate beds to establish that setting materials would not leach through and stain properly damp-proofed pavers, the products showed no staining. Indiana Limestone pavers were tested in fixtures on properly compacted aggregate bedding to simulate typical residential pedestrian use. This demanding procedure was carried out by an independent laboratory. It applied and released 225 pounds of force through 100,000 cycles without any observable negative effects.

"We're very excited to have partnered with a third-party lab to do testing to ensure durability of our pavers over a properly compacted aggregate base," said Ben Wojcikiewicz, AKBD, director of product development and brand marketing at the Indiana Limestone Company.

"As we have grown our hardscape market presence with the Urban Hardscapes product line, customers and installers were asking about our compatibility with this common installation method. Over the last year our teams worked to do the research, pin down the details and recommend a new standard for using Indiana Limestone pavers in this way."
