Renovation and Restoration: Architecture office adapts a bolder look

Cawley Architects, Inc. remodeled its 5,600-square-foot corporate headquarters in Phoenix, AZ, using bold stone materials, including granite and slate from Arizona Tile.

For the remodeling of its 5,600-square-foot corporate headquarters in Phoenix, AZ, employees of Cawley Architects, Inc. wanted to upgrade the look of its offices by adding elegant stone materials in unique colors, while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. In the end, the firm went with a striking combination of exotic granite and black slate.

One of the primary materials is polished Verde Fire granite, which was supplied by Arizona Tile of Phoenix, AZ. This material was selected for the tops of the reception desks, the credenza back bar and the adjacent coffee bar. “We knew we wanted to use hard surfaces, so we started with the Verde Fire and worked around those colors,” said Principal Paul Devers, Jr. “It is a really rich and unusual looking piece of stone. All the reds and greens and metal flecks make it a very dynamic stone.”

One of the signature materials of the design is Verde Fire granite, which features vibrant tones of red and green.

Meanwhile, the flooring throughout the offices is comprised of 16- x 16-inch tiles of honed Montauk Black slate, which provide a more muted, yet upscale look. And to add even more visual interest to the floor, the slate tiles are accented with 6- x 6-inch diamond inlays of Verde Fire granite.

“We wanted to carry the stone idea throughout to create richness in the office and to raise the level of design,” said the architect. “The stone countertops add a higher end level to those areas.”

The stone is complemented by rich woodwork for the cabinetry and reception desk, which also features diamond accents to mirror the flooring pattern.

The flooring is comprised of 16- x 16-inch tiles of honed Montauk Black slate, accented with 6- x 6-inch diamond inlays of Verde Fire granite.

Outside of the common areas, the guest restrooms also feature Verde Fire granite countertops and a Montauk Black slate floor.

In the employee restrooms, the color palette changes a bit, as the floors feature 12- x 12-inch tiles of Pearl Green granite, and the same material was also implemented for countertops.
