2001 Tucker Awards honor superior architecture

Excellence in architecture was the spirit of the evening on May 16, when the 2001 Tucker Awards were presented at a dinner held at the University Club in Denver, CO. Sponsored by the Building Stone Institute (BSI), the awards program was held in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention.

The entries were judged by an independent panel of architects without the participation of any member of the stone industry, according to the BSI. The projects were considered for their excellence in concept, design, construction and use of natural stone.

Presenting the awards was Peter H. Dominick, FAIA, senior principal and director of design of the Urban Design Group in Denver, who served as chairman of the architectural awards jury. Additional jury members included George Hoover, FAIA, founder and design architect of the Denver-based firm AE7 Hoover Desmond Architects, and chairman of the Department of Architecture at the University of Colorado; and Robert Murase, FASLA, of Robert Murase Associates of Portland, OR.

This year's winners in the category of "Non-Residential Building Completed Within the Last Five Years" included:

  • Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects LLP, New York, NY; ABN-AMRO Bank World Headquarters, Amersterdam,

    The Netherlands

  • Pei Partnership Architects,
    New York, NY; Bank of China Headquarters, Beijing, China
  • Page Southerland Page, Austin, TX; Barbara Jordan Passenger Terminal Complex, Austin International Airport, Austin, TX
  • Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects, Inc., Boston, MA; Edward W. Brooke Courthouse, Boston, MA
  • Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Philadelphia, PA; The Sellinger School of Business & Management, Loyola University

    Among those honored in the category of "Residential Structure Completed Within the Last Five Years" were:

  • Rockhill & Associates, Lecompton, KS; Epard/Porsch House, Lawrence, KS
  • Centerbrook Architects, Centerbrook, CT; Guyott House, Connecticut Coast
  • McKinney Architects, Inc., Austin, TX; San Antonio River House, San Antonio, TX

There was also a winner in a combined category of both "Residential and Landscape."

Peridian International, Inc., Newport Beach, CA; The Herbst Residence, Las Vegas, NV

Winners in the category of "Landscape in a Non-Residential Site Development" included:

  • Stuart B. Crawford, Architect, Lakewood, CO; New York City Police Memorial, Battery Park City, NY
  • Combined design team: M. Paul Friedberg, Landscape Architect and Jackie Ferrara, Artist; Sunny Slope Canal Demonstration Project, Phoenix, AZ
  • EDAW, Inc., Fort Collins, CO; Terrace Gardens at Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, Salt Lake City, UT
  • Mitchell/Giurgola Architects, New York, NY; The Belvedere, Battery Park City, NY
  • Gregg Bleam Landscape Architects, Charlottesville, VA; University of Virginia Research Park, Albemarle County, VA

In the category of a "Renovation or Restoration Project Completed Within the Last Five Years," the winners were:

  • Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, Architecture & Engineering, Albany, NY; Blair and Buyers Halls, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
  • Ford Farewell Mills & Gatsch, Architects, Princeton, NJ; Cleveland Memorial Tower, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
  • Kallman McKinnell & Wood Architects, Inc., Boston, MA; Sterling Law School, Yale University, New Haven, CT
