Local stone reflects New England style

For this private residence in Greenwich, CT, the owners selected material from O&G Industries natural Thin Stone line to clad the exterior facade and chimneys.

The stone pieces were a blend of three colors - Midnight Mist, Liberty Hill and Mountain Rose. Measurements of each piece range in size from 2, 4, 6 and 8 inches in height to lengths ranging from 12 to 24 inches. The thicknesses were between ¾ and 1 ½ inches.

Set in the picturesque New England town of Greenwich, CT, the owner of an upscale residence wanted the exterior design of their new home to feature natural stone, which is inherent of the area architecture. But to save on cost, they chose natural thin stone veneer that provided the same rich look and texture that is achieved with thicker pieces of stone.

“The homeowners wanted a stone house, but wanted it to be economical,” said Ed Moavero of O&G Industries, Masonry Division in Connecticut, the stone supplier and fabricator for the project. “They didn’t want manufactured manmade stone.”

As a result, the owners chose O&G’s natural Thin Stone line, which features three colors - Midnight Mist, Liberty Hill and Mountain Rose. The measurements of the stone pieces varied from 2, 4, 6 and 8 inches in height to lengths ranging from 12 to 24 inches. The thicknesses were between ¾ and 1 ½ inches.

“It is a traditional New England look,” said Moavero. “The pieces were cut in an ashlar pattern.” He explained that the company’s Thin Stone line is quarried and milled locally in Connecticut. And to further enhance the look of the facade, O&G’s Thin Stone line comes with L-shaped corners, to give a perception of thicker material, explained Moavero.

In addition to meeting budgetary requirements, the Thin Stone line also allows five times more stone than traditional veneer to be applied to a facade, according to O&G Industries. “Because the Thin Stone is not load-bearing, it eliminates the need for costly stone shelves,” states the company. “In addition, the efficient speed with which it can be installed creates a huge savings in time management.”

Moavero explained that O&G Industries supplied stone pieces for a mock-up, which the builder, Madaket Beach Builders of Greenwich, assembled at the jobsite. In total, approximately 6,000 square feet of material was supplied for the project.

“The product is packaged in 11-square-foot boxes of each size and height,” said Moavero. “There is also 6 lineal feet of corners for each box.”

The thin stone veneer panels were used for the home’s exterior front and chimneys as well as some retaining walls. Installation took about two to three weeks to complete.

“This project has generated a tremendous amount of interest from builders and architects throughout Fairfield and Westchester counties,” said Moavero, adding that the Masonry Division of O&G Industries has a broad range of facilities throughout Connecticut, including five mason stores and stoneyards, four Earth Products Showcase showrooms, a fabrication and distribution center and a stone splitter operation.
