Landscaping with stone

May 5, 2004
WHITEHALL, LONDON, U.K. - Approximately 7,535 square feet of Burlington Slate Ltd.'s distinctive blue/gray Kirkby stone in a flamed finish has been used for the landscaped gardens of the West Courtyard area at HM Treasury's Headquarters in Whitehall, London.

As part of a major refurbishment of the upscale building by leading architects Foster and Partners, the new gardens are the brainchild of London-based landscape architects, Gustafson Porter, and present a haven of retreat for the some 1,200 treasury staff.

Formerly an inaccessible courtyard, the gardens serve to provide a relaxed and contemporary feel that is in sharp contrast to the surrounding formal built environment. The garden combines the blue/gray stone with stainless steel and hardwood timber with plants, trees and soothing water features.

Primarily used to create an underwater surface for the central water feature, Burlington's blue/gray Kirkby stone was the perfect choice for this project. “The color of this stone provides the perfect illusion of depth when laid beneath water, and creates a mirror effect against the sky and surrounding buildings, especially at night when the facades are well lit,” stated Neil Porter of Gustafson Porter. “We have recently been commissioned to complete a design for the East Courtyard, and the choice will almost certainly be Burlington.”
