Native limestone adheres hotel to development

Located in one of the fastest growing small cities in the nation, Frisco, TX, the Embassy Suites Hotel Dallas-Frisco comprises 13 stories, 321 rooms, a 95,000-square-foot convention center and a 680-space multi-story parking garage. The 322,000-square-foot hotel is adjacent to both a new semi-pro baseball stadium and a new practice facility for the Dallas Stars hockey team, as well as office and residential developments. The hotel’s exterior features Texas limestone, while marble and onyx were used extensively throughout the interior of the space.

For the design of a 4,500-square-foot private residence in Vail, CO, Fritzlen Pierce Architects sought to create a home that reflected an intimate relationship with the Gore Creek area surrounding the development, and natural stone was an obvious choice to help accomplish this goal.

A Mediterranean feel achieved with limestone

When designing a private residence in Southern California, the designers were challenged to establish a Mediterranean feel with a classic Italian look to it. To meet the owner’s desired aesthetic, Massangis French limestone was selected for the exterior facade, while a number of stone materials were carried inside the home, adding to the overall charm of the space.

Corporate structure relies on slate flooring

Designed by Callison Architecture, Inc. of Seattle, WA, with a vision of “instant access to information by anyone from anywhere,” the Boeing World Headquarters in Chicago, IL, features 275,000 square feet of sophisticated office space. Further enhancing the corporate design, the 30th floor reception area features slate flooring, which was quarried by Burlington Slate, Ltd. in England.

Community center establishes a presence with slate

City leaders envisioned the George M. Silliman Community Activity Center in Newark, CA, as the showpiece of the community. According to California-based Glass Architects, the program called for a 36,000-square-foot Community Center to be constructed as the first phase, with provision for a 32,000-square-foot Aquatic Center added as a second phase. In establishing the design, Chinese slate from Echeguren Slate, Inc. of San Francisco, CA, was selected as flooring throughout the public spaces of the facility, as well as for roofing.

Federal building adds slate for durability

The Miami Federal Courthouse in Miami, FL - formally referred to as the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. United States Federal Courthouse - one of the largest federal courthouses in the U.S., was recently expanded and now comprises 578,000 square feet, including 14 courtrooms spanning the length of two city blocks. The design completes the judicial campus created by the old courthouse, the courthouse annex tower, the Lawrence King Building and the federal prison. Designed by Miami-based Arquitectonica and national architecture firm HOK, a variety of natural stone was added to the building, including slate flooring from American Slate Co. and Italian limestone from Grassi Pietre s.r.l. It also has a signature waterwall comprised of a number of stone materials.

Fieldstone creates a Chateau-style residence

To establish a large-scale French Chateau theme for a 9,000-square-foot residence in Bethesda, MD, the local firm of Mangan Group Architects selected fieldstone for the exterior. And to complement the design of the home, slate paving was installed throughout an outdoor patio area. Luck Stone Corp. of Richmond, VA, supplied both materials for the project.
