Indian granite adds
value to historic hotel

The public restrooms and guest bathrooms throughout the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel in Scranton, PA, were recently renovated to include a variety of granite. For the ladies room located in the Pre-function events area of the hotel, Hindustan Granites, Inc., of Hauppauge, NY, fabricated large-format tiles of Shiva Gold granite for the walls and flooring. Additionally, slabs of Ruby Red granite were used for vanity tops, and the same material was also used as a border on the wall and floor.

The six-story Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, an historic landmark located in Scranton, PA, recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to honor the past while also giving the hotel an inviting, yet timeless appeal. The redesign included the addition of granite flooring and countertops -- which were fabricated in India -- in guest rooms as well as for private and public restrooms throughout the hotel. Hindustan Granites, Inc. of Hauppauge, NY, supplied over 20,000 square feet of various types of granite for the project.
“The goal of the project was the complete renovation of our guest rooms, which included sleep number beds, new carpeting and drapery and new granite flooring and countertops in all our rooms and bathrooms,” said Sameer Ali, Assistant General Manager of the hotel.
A variety of granite materials were used, including Absolute Black, Shiva Gold, Ruby Red and Harvest Cream, among others. “Most of the stone used was granite, and it was primarily used in the bathrooms and for room floors,” explained Ali. “Granite adds value to the bathroom layout and looks very classy and aristocratic.” Ali went on to say that the material was also chosen because it is easier to clean and stronger than other stone materials.
According to Prakash Doddahosahalli of Hindustan Granites, Inc., Harvest Cream and Ruby Red granite were fabricated for vanity tops in the restrooms located in Carmen’s Ristorante & Wine Bar, which can be found in the hotel’s Grand Lobby, Trax Perfectly Cosmopolitan, another trendy restaurant and bar, and in the Pre-Function events area where group meetings are held.
“All these bathrooms, as well at the Trax hall floor, vestibules and main hallways, feature a combination of Absolute Black, Shiva Gold, Ruby Red, Golden Juparana and Harvest Cream tiles,” said Doddahosahalli.
Ali said that the only challenge in regards to the stonework was the fact that some of the countertops and backsplashes had to be cut in particular shapes and designs. “Renovation is an ongoing process,” he said. “As a large hotel, we are used to having some pauses in our projects, but it took about a year to complete all 146 rooms, public restrooms, elevators, etc.” Ali added that there were four workers on the job for installing the stonework, and the crew also helped out the maintenance department when needed.
The renovation work began in November 2004 and was completed in February 2007. “We have received a great response from the community, City and all the guests,” said Ali. “The property has added a lot more value, and it looks absolutely gorgeous after the renovation.”
