Fabricator Case Study: Running an integrated system

Cumar Marble & Granite, Inc. of Everett, MA, processes stonework for individual residences as well as multi-unit hotel and condominium projects. One of the key pieces of machinery is an Intermac Master Stone 4000, purchased from AGM.

A Flow waterjet is used for complex and curved cuts, and it is equipped with abrasives from Barton Mines.

Although Cumar Marble & Granite of Everett, MA, was founded in 1994, the history of its owner, Angelo “Ivo” Cubi, goes back farther than that. Cubi, a native of Italy, has a solid background in stoneworking, and he has developed a state-of-the-art shop that serves the residential and commercial markets.

A recent investment has been a Bovone machine that was designed specifically for processing backsplashes.

Cumar's production is diverse, and it works on custom one-of-a-kind jobs as well as multi-unit hotel and condominium projects. Its stonework can be found in some of Boston's most prestigious downtown hotel spaces. The facility in Everett includes the stoneworking shop as well as a large warehouse for inventorying slab materials. Currently, Cumar maintains an inventory of 8,000 slabs, including many unique high-end materials not found elsewhere in the U.S. To ensure that Cumar's collection of stone includes some of the latest material selections in the world, Cubi personally travels to stone fairs and factories around the world to source materials.

Sawing is done on a Bisso bridge saw from Italy, which has a high level of automation, and can be programmed and integrated with the operations of the CNC and the waterjet.

Equipment in Cumar's shop includes an Intermac Master Stone 4000 CNC stoneworking center, which it purchased from AGM. Workpieces are loaded and unloaded from the CNC machine using an adjacent Elephant lifter, also from AGM.

Slabs are cut to size on two bridge saws as well as a Flow waterjet. The waterjet is used for complex and curved cuts, and it is equipped with abrasives from Barton Mines. Both bridge saws were manufactured in Italy, including models from Bisso and Te.Co Macchine. The Bisso model has a high level of automation, and it can be programmed and integrated with the operations of the CNC and the waterjet.

Cumar's shop also has a CMG Taurus 560 edging machine for straight processing of bullnose, half bullnose and other basic edges.

In addition to complex edge processing fabrication on the CNC, Cumar's shop has a CMG Taurus 560 edging machine for straight processing of bullnose, half bullnose and other basic edges. A recent investment has been a Bovone machine that was designed specifically for processing backsplashes.

Slabs are cut to size as needed on a bridge saw from Te.Co. Macchine of Italy.

After a job is measured, the crews create hard templates, which are placed on a digitizing board and scanned point by point in order to create the data needed to program the machinery. It is also looking into digital templating technology. Between the shop and the field crews, Cumar has 30 employees total.

The facility in Everett includes the stoneworking shop as well as a large warehouse for inventorying slab materials.

In all, a total of 60% of Cumar's work is commercial, and the company works with leading builders and commercial installers in the Boston metropolitan area.

Currently, Cumar maintains an inventory of 8,000 slabs, including many unique high-end materials not found elsewhere in the U.S.

Over the years, Cumar has completed stonework for some of Boston's most prestigious downtown hotel spaces.
