Although Cumar Marble & Granite of Everett, MA, was founded in 1994, the history of its owner, Angelo “Ivo†Cubi, goes back farther than that. Cubi, a native of Italy, has a solid background in stoneworking, and he has developed a state-of-the-art shop that serves the residential and commercial markets.

Cumar's production is diverse, and it works on custom one-of-a-kind jobs as well as multi-unit hotel and condominium projects. Its stonework can be found in some of Boston's most prestigious downtown hotel spaces. The facility in Everett includes the stoneworking shop as well as a large warehouse for inventorying slab materials. Currently, Cumar maintains an inventory of 8,000 slabs, including many unique high-end materials not found elsewhere in the U.S. To ensure that Cumar's collection of stone includes some of the latest material selections in the world, Cubi personally travels to stone fairs and factories around the world to source materials.

Equipment in Cumar's shop includes an Intermac Master Stone 4000 CNC stoneworking center, which it purchased from AGM. Workpieces are loaded and unloaded from the CNC machine using an adjacent Elephant lifter, also from AGM.

The Bisso model has a high level of automation, and it can be programmed and integrated with the operations of the CNC and the waterjet.
Cumar's shop also has a CMG Taurus 560 edging machine for straight processing of bullnose, half bullnose and other basic edges.

After a job is measured, the crews create hard templates, which are placed on a digitizing board and scanned point by point in order to create the data needed to program the machinery. It is also looking into digital templating technology. Between the shop and the field crews, Cumar has 30 employees total.

In all, a total of 60% of Cumar's work is commercial, and the company works with leading builders and commercial installers in the Boston metropolitan area.
