The Willow School: An Environment Ethic in Design, Construction, and Curriculum

Presented by Stephanie U. Vierra, President of Vierra Design & Education Services, LLC in Gaithersburg, MD, this case study will provide an overview of the design and construction of The Willow School, an independent coeducational K-8 day school in Gladstone, NJ, and demonstrate how natural stone played an important role in the sustainability and performance goals of the project. The school is committed to combining academic excellence with the joy of learning and experiencing the wonder of the natural world. The Willow School was the second independent school in the U.S. to receive a LEED Gold rating.

Kroon Hall: A Case Study in Sustainable Stone Design

This case study will provide valuable information on the new home of Yale University’s Kroon Hall, the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, and demonstrate how natural stone played an important role in the sustainability goals and performance outcome of the project. The approach to this project demonstrates exemplary integrated design resulting in an award-winning and high-performing building that sets the bar for sustainable design on Yale’s campus.

Natural Stone from Trentino: Case Study-Requalification of the Main Piazza in Rosa’, Italy

This session is presented by Vincent Marazita of Marazita & Associates, a long-time provider of AIA education as part of the Marmomacc Stone Academy. It will provide an overview of the geological wealth of the Trentino Region, located in Northeastern Italy.  The session will present dimensional stones that are available in this region and address both historical and contemporary architectural uses of stone in this area. It will then take a more in-depth look at the most used natural stone in the region: porphyry. Finally, the session will cover an award-winning project in Horizontal Architecture; an award-winning urban design  project in Rosa’, Italy.This seminar was a collaboration with Trentino Sprint (regional promotions agency), ESPO (promotions of the quality control, installation and use of porphyry) and Marazita & Associates (International Stone Consultants).
