Located in the Cheviot Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, a 1948 California-style two-story home was in need of a cleaner and more contemporary kitchen, where gourmet meals could be prepared while still being a place for the family to come together. The prime critic of this project was the homeowner himself. As a chef, he called for details to support his hands-on methods. Dealing with the particularly small size of the 260-square-foot space, designer Christopher Grubb, President of Arch-Interiors design group, inc. was able to add 90 square feet onto the kitchen. Moreover, he chose a palette of granite and slate to complete the look of the space.

Grubb’s solution to his client’s request was to build a two-level, U-shaped island with Golden Dragon granite countertops to match the custom cherry-stained cabinets. The island features two separate cook tops on a lower section — allowing the homeowner to prepare different dishes easily while still having room to do prep work. The same Golden Dragon granite was used for perimeter countertops as well as full backsplashes as well to give the room an elegant contemporary and cohesive look.

The granite served to be ideal for the homeowners, as they took a liking to warm materials. “This granite was perfect because of the motion in it, while echoing the cherry color of the cabinetry and the grays of the slate,” explained the designer. “Using the granite as the full backsplash also added to the contemporary feeling of the kitchen.”

Complementing the granite countertops are slate floor tiles. Since the family frequently dines outdoors, Grubb transitioned to the inside by running the same slate tile used for the patio into the kitchen and an adjacent laundry room to create an “indoor/outdoor feeling.”

The best advantage of this space is the ability to sit at the island and have everything close by, including the cook top, a warming drawer, microwave and convention/convection oven unit, Grubb stated. “I’m amazed how much we fit into such a small space,” he said.
