Don't be shy about promoting qualityQuality A-1

by Michael Reis, Editor

In past editions of the print and electronic editions of Stone World, I have praised the quality of craftsmanship among stone fabricators in North America. But unfortunately, as many readers have pointed out to me, there may be just as many "hacks" out there who are doing low-quality work for below-market prices. In my capacity as editor of our industry's trade magazine, I am primarily exposed to conscientious fabricators. They are the ones who attend trade shows, forums and other industry gatherings, while the hacks don't generally bother. But I realize that while I am not often in contact with the bottom feeders, they are certainly out there -- and probably always will be in one form or another. Click here to read more.

Ultimate Granite Surfaces, Gibsonia, PAUltimate

by Jennifer Adams, Managing Editor

Ultimate Granite Surfaces (UGS) Inc. of Gibsonia, PA, is the result of a family taking a chance on a new concept in stone fabrication at the time called "thinstone." And while this initial investment was the force that drove the company's growth in its early days, UGS has now expanded its operation to include the fabrication of 3-cm stone and quartz surfacing products. Abruzzi Stone, Cherry Hill, NJ/Philadelphia, PAAbruzzi

by Michael Reis, Editor

After making a name for Abruzzi Stone & Flooring as a high-end stone fabricator in the Philadelphia, PA, region, Anthony DiGuglielmo greatly expanded his company's scope with the formation of Stone Design Works, a high-end showroom in Cherry Hill, NJ, serving the Philadelphia region and beyond.
For DiGuglielmo, who has been in the business for 25 years, the move meant making a transition to importing finished products and operating a large showroom - while also continuing slab fabrication. "We wanted to create a one-stop shop," explained DiGuglielmo. "When the economy went bad, our contractor work was becoming less and less, so we decided that we needed to have a showroom." Cowboys Stadium, Dallas, TXCowboys

by Michael Reis, Editor

When Cowboys Stadium made its regular season debut for a national television audience in September, legendary broadcaster Al Michaels referred to the facility as a "palace." And while that may be the first time the term "palace" has been associated with a sports venue, it is a fitting description for a facility that was designed in a style befitting a five-star resort -- including lavish use of stone throughout. M Resort, Henderson, NVM Resort

by Jennifer Adams, Managing Editor

Among the latest luxury establishments to hit the Las Vegas region is the M Resort, Spa and Casino -- located on a 90-acre piece of property on South Las Vegas Boulevard in Henderson, NV. The resort not only attracts guests who are looking to relax, pamper themselves and enjoy Las Vegas nightlife, but it also recently provided the home kitchen to Season 6 contestants on Bravo's popular television series "Top Chef." Designed and built by Marnell Corrao Associates of Las Vegas, the M Resort is lavishly dressed in Italian marble and Turkish travertine throughout its interior and exterior spaces -- creating a warm yet contemporary environment.
