And so when I asked a group of fabricators at StoneAdvice.com how they were diversifying their business to deal with the economic downturn, the depth of their replies -- recapped in the "How-To" section of this E-Newsletter -- was certainly not a surprise to me.

Johnson Stone Countertop, Tacoma, WA

For Josh and Anne Lavine, the owners of Johnson Stone Countertop in Tacoma, WA, the experience of their employees -- coupled with a collection of advanced machinery -- has allowed the company to become an elite fabricator, especially in the quartz surfacing arena. And since their purchase of the company in September of 2007, the Lavines have witnessed continued growth in the shop as well as an expansion in product offerings and client types.

Beginning with just a track saw in 2002, The Countertop Place of Wichita, KS, now owns a complete line of state-of-the-art equipment -- turning itself into a technologically advanced fabricating shop. Pinnacle Stone, LLC, Parkesburg, PA

Less than two years ago, Pinnacle Stone Products, LLC of Parkesburg, PA, was formed as a collaborative effort between The H&K Group, based in Skippack, PA, and Brandywine Quarry of Parkesburg. Sitting on nearly five acres of land, Pinnacle Stone Products has invested in modern equipment to exclusively produce thin stone veneer from a diverse lineup of materials. Full article

Developments in Brazil - Vitória Stone Fair Review

The Vitória Stone Fair took place in the stoneworking center of Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, from February 10 to 13, and despite difficulties on the worldwide economic front, the show remains a key event for the international stone trade. After a somewhat slow opening day, traffic on the trade show floor picked up as the event moved along, and exhibitors reported that they had quality meetings during the fair. Moreover, the companies on hand at the show displayed a broad range of materials specifically for the American marketplace.

Developments in Brazil - Supplier Case Study: Bramagran

Pemagran was founded in the stone-rich area of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, Brazil, in 1979 by husband and wife -- Calbir Valente Sandrini and Corsina de Moraes Sandrini. Today, the factory is directed by their sons, Cláudio L. de Moraes Sandrini and Adriano de Moraes Sandrini, and it is continually upgrading its operations and material selection to satisfy its clients. Developments in Brazil - Supplier Case Study: Cosentino/Latina Vitória

Based in Spain and operating in locations around the world, Cosentino S.A. opened its Brazilian stoneworking operation -- Latina Vitória -- in Serra, Espirito Santo, in 2002. Five years later, the factory underwent a major expansion, with over $40 million invested in new equipment and facilities, and its latest introduction is the SenSa Granite line, which offers an enhanced level of protection and durability.
